2019 Rogers Scholar and Martin County High School student Lauren Horn is supporting her community by lending a helping hand to those who need it the most during COVID-19.

Horn organized the “Helping Hands” community service project to assist the elderly and other individuals considered to be at a higher risk of contracting the virus. She ran errands and picked up and delivered groceries for people in her community who were unable to perform these simple tasks due to health reasons or medical concerns.

“This project made me feel really fulfilled. I was helping to keep people safe from exposure to COVID-19,” Horn said. “This was very important to me, because I know people, like my grandparents, who are more at-risk due to age and comorbidities.”

“Lauren really impacted our lives when she offered to do errands for us during the COVID-19 pandemic,” added Donna Horn. “Due to health reasons, we were unable to leave our home and having her drive out of town to shop for our groceries was invaluable. We are deeply appreciative. It makes me proud to know that we have young people willing to help others during a crisis.”

Each graduate of The Center for Rural Development’s Rogers Scholars program is required to complete a community service project. For more information about Rogers Scholars, visit www.centeryouthprograms.com.
