KSP Post 14 Make Arrest After Father Shakes 5 Month Old

GRAYSON, KY. (January 24, 2020) – The Kentucky State Police are investigating after a 5-month-old infant was flown to Cabell Huntington Hospital with a serious brain injury. Hospital personnel became suspicious when they noticed multiple symptoms traditionally associated with of Shaken Baby Syndrome and contacted law enforcement.

The investigation revealed Jeffery Wellman, age 24, of Grayson, Kentucky intentionally harmed his 5-month-old son when he became frustrated and shook him causing abusive head trauma. The infant remains in critical condition.

On Friday, January 24, 2020, this case was presented before the Carter County Grand Jury who returned indictment on one count of Criminal Abuse 1st Degree –Victim Under 12. Currently, Mr. Wellman is being held in the Carter County Detention Center on a $500,000 cash bond.

This incident remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police Detective Jeff Kelley.
