On Tuesday January 14, 2020, the Lawrence County Master Gardener’s Club held their monthly meeting at the Lawrence County Extension Office.

LC Master Gardener’s was established in June 2013. The organization has since established the Louisa Community Garden, created various pollinator gardens throughout the county, worked with the elementary schools, 4-H, Girl Scouts, Rotary Club, the City of Louisa and other various organizations as requested.

Several members have also taught or spoke at different events both in and outside of Lawrence county! The Master gardeners along with the Lawrence County Homemaker’s will be setting up at the WSAZ Homeshow in March 13-15.

Master Gardeners are trained by U.K. Cooperative Extension Personnel in areas such as botany, plant pathology, soils, volunteerism, plant propagation, etc. If anyone is interested in becoming a Master Gardener in Lawrence County or your home county, please contact (606) 673-9495 or email: Laura.opell@uky.edu

Mobile sensory garden helped made by the Lawrence County Carpentry class.

They discussed at the meeting building more mobile carts for the Sensory Garden this coming Spring. Sensory gardens are gardens that are a collection of plants and other materials of different textures, shapes sizes and smells that will stimulate our senses of “seeing, smelling, touching, hearing and tasting.

While most gardens give a visual appeal, sensory gardens offer much more. They are primarily designed to stimulate the senses and for people living with disabilities or sensory issues ( such as children with autism), poor eyesight, or dementia, a sensory gardens can be very therapeutic.

“This has been a huge success,” said Rachel Jobe. “We have taken the sensory gardens to the nursing homes and schools and everyone really seems to enjoy them.”
