Ramey receives Presidential Award of Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
After receiving a high-quality education and preparation to be a teacher at Morehead State University, Melanie Ramey (07), has now received a presidential seal of approval for her work in the classroom.
The fourth-grade math teacher at Highland Elementary School in Johnson County was awarded the 2018 Presidential Award of Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The award is the highest honor given by the U.S. government to K-12 educators.
Ramey graduated summa cum laude from MSU with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education in 2007 and then earned a Master of Arts in P-5 Curriculum from Union College in 2018 and an Ed.S. in Supervision and Instruction from the University of the Cumberlands in 2018. For the past 12 years, she has taught in the Johnson County School District. She taught her first eight years at Meade Memorial Elementary School and later spent a year at Central Elementary School. She has spent the last two years teaching fourth grade mathematics at Highland Elementary School.
“The MSU Teacher Education program prepared me for my teaching career by providing a solid foundation of content, pedagogy and lesson design,” Ramey said. “I am thankful to have received my undergraduate education at Morehead State University.”
The United States Congress established the award in 1983, and the President of the United States awards up to 108 teachers of math and science each year. Awardees received a trip to Washington, D.C., where award winners participated in the White House Federal STEM Education Summit, an awards dinner at the Kennedy Center, an awards ceremony at the Department of the Interior, attended the Federal Partners Expo and received a tour of the White House.
