Louisa, Ky — In a game that came down to inches the Lawrence Co. ( 14-6 ) Girls soccer team came up just short in their quest to repeat as 15th Region Champs falling 5-4 to Prestonsburg ( 20-2 ) in double overtime Wednesday at the LCHS Soccer Complex.
Autumn Maynard scored the first goal for LC in the 15th Region Championship game.

Lawrence Co. got on the board when senior Autumn Maynard found the back of the net with the assist going to Sarah Lycans.

The SoccerDawgs’ second goal came from senior Sarah Lycans with the assist from Brylee Blair. Lycans booted in a free kick from 40 yards out to make it 3-3.

Freshman Brylee Blair put LC ahead 4-3 in the 15th Region Championship.

Blair gave Lawrence Co. the lead in the second half from Ellie Webb before Prestonsburg tied it at 4 late in regulation.

The teams played a scoreless five minute overtime before the Blackcats won it in the second overtime.

The SoccerDawgs lose four seniors Ally Moore, Autumn Maynard, Sarah Lycans and Hayleah Fletcher but the future is bright for this program.

Prestonsburg will play Estill Co., who won the 14th Region, in the first round of the State Tournament next week.

Lawrence Co. Head Coach Heath Webb

COACH’S COMMENTS

“… This was one of the most intense games I have ever been a part of as a coach. I’m sure coming into the game a lot of people didn’t give us much of a chance to win considering we had lost to them 6-2 two weeks earlier. The team believed we could beat them and bought into everything we asked them to do. They played with more heart and desire than any team I can remember watching. We thought we had it sealed with a 4-3 lead with just over 2:00 to play when they broke free and scored the tying goal.”

“… We asked them before the game that no matter the outcome to make sure there would be ‘no regrets or what ifs’ and to just play and leave everything out there on the field. Give credit to Prestonsburg for a great win. We almost had that storybook ending.”

“… We lose some talented seniors that will be difficult to replace but we plan to get to work and win the 10th straight district title and bring back the region championship to Lawrence Co. next season.”

4th goal was Ellie Webb assisted by Blair. Great game nonetheless.
