Deadline to Register to Vote Monday, October 7th

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Oct. 4, 2019) – Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, is encouraging all Kentucky voters to view the State Board of Elections’ Inactive Voter List.

Over the objection of Kentucky’s Chief Election Official and without notice to or a vote of approval by Kentucky’s State Board of Elections, staff of the State Board of Elections designated over 175,000 Kentucky voters’ records “inactive” impacting their participation in coming elections. Grimes raised concerns regarding the illegal list and noted thousands of these “inactive voters” actually voted as early as ten months ago in the 2018 General Election.

“While appointees of the Governor may be okay sitting idly by while staff of the State Board of Elections takes unilateral, arbitrary and unlawful actions without notice against thousands of Kentucky’s voters’ registrations, I am not. As Kentucky’s Chief Election Official, I’m issuing a call to action. It’s imperative that Kentucky voters take the time to review the State Board of Elections’ “inactive list,” contact my office if they see their name, and update their registration at GoVoteKY.com,” said Grimes.

Ahead of the October 7th voter registration deadline for Kentucky’s 2019 General Election on Tuesday, November 5th, all Kentucky voters should review the State Board of Elections’ “Inactive Voter List” for their name.

If Kentucky voters find their name on the “inactive voter list” voters should let the Secretary’s office know and visit GoVoteKY.com to review and update their voter registration records, no later than Monday, October 7, 2019 at 4:00 PM local time.

County clerks’ offices throughout Kentucky will accept online and paper voter registration applications until 4 p.m. local time on the deadline. Mail-in voter registration applications must be postmarked by October 7.

To be eligible to vote, Kentuckians must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Be a Kentucky resident for at least 28 days before Election Day.
  • Be at least 18-years-old on or before the General Election.
  • Not be a convicted felon, or if convicted of a felony offense, must have obtained a restoration of civil rights.
  • Not have been adjudged “mentally incompetent.”
  • Not claim the right to vote anywhere outside Kentucky.
  • Kentuckians who are 17-years-old but will be 18-years-old on or before November 5, 2019 are eligible to register and vote in the upcoming General Election.

Voters who have recently moved need to update their voter registration information by no later than October 7, 2019.

Voters may view their current registration status and where they vote at GoVoteKY.com. For questions, contact your county clerk or the State Board of Elections at (502) 573-7100.
