PAINTSVILLE, Ky. — BSRDC board chairman Daniel Castle announced today that the center is making progress towards a more complete jail system with the addition of educational opportunities for inmates.
“We now have 53 inmates testing for/in the process of getting their GED’s whereas last year there was zero,” Castle said. Last month the jail board voted to pursue other inmate friendly proposals such as drug treatment through Addiction Recovery Care in Louisa.
The board has also taken action to increase the benefits and pay of employees at the 150 bed facility that serves Johnson, Lawrence, Magoffin and Martin Counties as well as other inmates from state prisons.
“We voted to give all employees a 2.5% COLA raise & we are working on lowering our inmate booking fee so it’s more affordable to those who come in,” Castle said.
Castle also said the board is working on a “scared straight” school program for appropriate age kids to visit the jail to see what it’s like behind bars.
