Board of Education Regular meeting held at Fallsburg Elementary

The BOE held their regular monthly meeting Monday September 16, 2019 at Fallsburg Elementary School. There were demonstrations regarding Sensory Gardens for special needs children in the local schools. There was also a Peer to Student Personalized Coaching presentation.

     3.  Student / Staff Presentions:

The Lawrence County Master Gardeners Mobile Sensory Garden presented a “All In LC” mobile wheelbarrow with various flowers and plants that children with special needs can touch, feel and smell. This Sensory Garden program shows the importance of recognizing when a child having a bad day and one way to handle it is by allowing those children to use the garden to calm down and relax. The Sensory Mobile Sensory Garden will be traveling to all the local schools and giving everyone a chance to educate themselves and see the difference it can make.

Student Tac Stratton and teacher Ms. Wrendi McDavid.

Fallsburg Elementary presented Personalized Coaching. In the beginning of the school students pick 1 teacher to be placed with for students to have one on one school teacher to help them reach their goals by the end of the year. Every teacher has approximately 6-7 students that they guide til the end of the year helping them reach their goals. Tac Stratton, student at Fallsburg, talked about the experience he had. Since the beginning of school when he made his goal plan his counselor was there all the way through school til the end, where he saw that he had not only reach his goals but he excelled with their help. Now in 7th grade he has a college he’s looking into and seeing a bright future. Having these personalized coaches is proving very successful.

      4.  Communication

The Board heard from Superintendent’s Update. Homecoming was another great Sprit Week where Seniors won. The Board also discussed having no school the Friday before Septemberfest in the future giving the community the entire weekend for enjoying the festival and to help with fundraising.

Dr. Fletcher discussed School sites beginning this week with principals. He also participated in the House Education Committee where they discussed the hiring of teachers and Dr. Fletcher expressed that the Superintendents should have the final say of hiring new teachers. Currently there are 4 positions open in Lawrence County and they were involved in hiring a biology teacher based on the emergency certification that will allow for a teacher to be placed immediately in that class.
