Catlettsburg, KY. (August 9, 2019) -The University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment Cooperative Extension Service office held a Proclamation and Citation Presentation Ceremony today in honor of the Sanibel House. Sanibel House is a men’s residential drug treatment center within the Addiction Recovery Care network located in Catlettsburg, KY. Over the past few months the Boyd County Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) has teamed up with Sanibel House to create a “Recovery Garden”. A group of 20 people in recovery have planted in the garden and have been tending to a variety of vegetables including peppers, onions, cabbage, zucchini, and tomatoes.
“Gardening is hard work like recovery. They both teach dedication and responsibility to complete the harvest,” stated Rep. Terri Branham-Clark.
Branham-Clark was the keynote speaker for the ceremony today. Other speakers such as Mayor of Catlettsburg, Faith Pike, Tiffany Lopez of WOWK-TV, Stephanie Derifield from the Kentucky Nutrition Education Program, along with Lori Bowling, the local Horticulture Agent were also speakers at the event. Shannon Blankenship, a Kentucky Peer Support Specialist at Sanibel House who is dedicated to long term recovery, also told his story of recovery.
This partnership helps people in recovery learn to give back while at the same time develop hobbies for the new track of life they are on. In the future they will be teaming up for other projects such as nutrition lessons, fishing 101, and a frisbee golf event.
