After dispatching of routine reports the Lawrence County fiscal court got down to business approving a resolution that will allow $50,000 in coal severance tax monies to go towards exterior cleanup and landscape of the courthouse as well as $80,000 in improvements to the Yatesville Lake properties owned by the taxpayers. The resolution was passed unanimously but there was no mention on when the projects will begin.
The court welcomed newly elected state senator Phillip Wheeler who called Lawrence County one of the most beautiful parts of the region.
“With the assets this county has with rail and interstate connections and I look forward to working with the people here towards development and progress, Wheeler said. “Thank you so much for putting your trust in me and I look forward to doing my best as your state senator.”
Wheeler, a Republican has already served a few days in the senate after winning a special election last month, but got a taste of all the workings. “It’s a lot to be thrown at you at one time but I’m enjoying it,” Wheeler told The Lazer before the meeting.
Judge/Executive Phillip Carter informed the court of his plan tom close a small portion of a road near the county garage. “It needs to be fixed correctly so traffic can flow, right now it’s a mess,” Carter said. He said he wants to close one portion of the road around the garage and the court agreed after county attorney Mike Hogan reminded them that there must me a written agreement among property owners affected that it does not “landlock” anyone. Motion by Davis Pinson, second by Mike Halcomb.
Jessica Perry was named as the new county animal control officer and some of the ordinance pertaining to animal control was changed. Carter said all $5 dog licenses will now be sold at the county judge’s office and the money collected will go to Ms. Perry’s salary and equipment.There will be a $10 fine for those who do not pay within ten days, Carter said. He said the Lawrence County Animal Shelter no longer sells dog tags.
In other matters:
- On motion of Rick Blackburn and second by Mike “Mouse” Halcomb the court agreed on a lease agreement with Legend Outfitters, the company that operates the kayaks and other activities at “The Cove” at Yatesville Park. “The county maintains control of this part of the Corps of Engineers Yatesville lake area and that is clear in the agreement. But Legend Outfitters has a franchise of kayaks and paddle boats and other activities,” Hogan explained.
- Unanimously accepted the budget to the County Extension office with little change from last year except that the Extension Office has paid off its building with will change budget some but not the amount. Extension Agent Laura Maggard was in attendance to answer all questions from the court. Motion Blackburn, second Pinson.
- Accepted Soil and Conservation budget on motion of Pinson, send by Blackburn.
- Accepted lone bid for steel to repair slippages in roadways at $21 per ft.
- Approved a $100 donation to Blaine Spring Carnival

I agree the city needs to stop giving ARC the money. Oh let’s support people that claim to be sober. && Mark Wheeler would have been better than the one that’s in there. Like I said it’s all on you know around here..

Actually, it is funded thru the taxpayers. The Federal and State governments do not create funds. It is funded on the backs of people that get up and go to work everyday!!
