January is School Board Recognition Month as proclaimed by Judge/Exec Phillip Carter. All the Board Members were presented with a certificate for their years of hard work and they all went around telling why they love being on the Board of Education. (Mrs. Garnett Skaggs was not in attendance).

Next on The Communication agenda we heard from Superintendent’s updates that Lt. Governor Jenean Hampton visited Blaine and Louisa Middle Schools and there were talks of her hoping to return soon.

Superintendent Fletcher continues his talks with legislative panel at KEDC. There he discussed financial concerns of the rural bus routes traveled and their financial upkeep and maintained to safety levels considering the areas they travel some are unpaved, graveled terrain and even require special buses with bigger engines to run these routes.

The agenda then went over the Special Board Meeting set Jan. 31st at 6 pm in the LCHS Library, where finance and school dashboards will be discussed.

The Alternative School received commendations along with recommendations from Mr. Orman on running an effective school. One of many commendations was how impressed the level of loyalty for the students and staff go. One of Mr. Orman’s recommendations was to have Mr. Matt Maynard take over Director of the Alternative School. He also recommended that the students spend too much time on computers and needed more group activities.

On Jan. 31st the KSP will start safety training “teachers be ready” beginning at LEES and visiting every school within the county. Superintendent Fletcher said, “Hopefully we will never need this training —  but it’s better to be ready.”

For the Annual Wellness and Nutrition Report the school has made many changes to the school menu adding in various fruits, smoothies and breakfast for lunch. Cyndi Hayes put together a wonderful nutritional program and the school was able to install $141,000 in new equipment.

Next on the Agenda were the approval of December minutes and to approve the Claims and Orders of the Treasurer, Approve the Monthly Financial Report by Finance Officer Brandi VanHoose. All Motions heard were approved and carried.

The Consent Agenda Items were all approved and the Board Of Education moved into the Executive Session to discuss proposed or pending litigation against or behalf of the public agency.
