TRAFFIC PROBLEMS NEAR LOUISA EAST DISCUSSED BY COUNCIL

Regular meeting minutes from October City Council meeting

The regular meeting of the Louisa City Council was called to order at 7pm on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at Louisa City Hall. Mayor Harold Slone and Council members Mitch Castle, Ron Cordle, Matt Brown John Nolan, and Lisa Schaeffer, were present. 

Mayor Slone opened the meeting with he ledge led by John Nolan and prayer by Mitch Castle.

  • Mayor Slone opened the meeting by advising council that the downtown water main rehab project has been submitted to Division of Water for plan and spec approval. Work should begin soon. Mayor also advised council that the street department is currently working on patching pot holes and paving should begin soon.
  • Mayor updated that the Sewer Infiltration project is currently with engineering and going to Division of Water for plan and spec approval. This project will greatly reduce strain on the sewer system and improve efficiency and reduce problems.
  • Mayor Slone updated council about the traffic problem at Louisa East Elementary which continues to worsen. The Mayor and Police Chief met the school Superintendent over a year ago to propose a plan to alleviate the traffic problem for local residents. The school liked the plan but advised it must be approved by the Kentucky Department of Education in two different divisions. Mayor Slone read an email he had received from Dr. Rob Flecther advising the plan was finally approved with the State Dept. of Education and could begin once paperwork was finished and funds were secured to do the work. Mayor advised that he had been in touch with Dept of Transportation, state representative Jill Short and others about funding possibilities and would advise as soon as it was approved.
  • Council was updated on funding received from the State Dept. of Transportation to repave Part of Bulldog Ln.
  • Council heard request for use of Community Center for no charge for 2 community events. One for The Christmas Parade another for Rise Above to feed people for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Motion by Lisa Schaeffer, second by Matt Brown. All approve.
  • Second reading of Ordinance 18-03, which set the 2018 property tax rates, Motion by Ron Cordle, Second by Mitch Castle, All approve.
  • Mayor re-appointed 2 utility board members whose terms had expired. Motion by John Nolan, send by Matt Brown to re-appoint Jeff Kinser for a 2 year term. All approve. Motion by Matt Brown, second by Mitch Castle, to re-appoint Heath Preston for a 1 year term. All approve.
  • Mitch Castle advised he may no longer serve on the  Utility Board after the end of the year due to time constraints with his family. Council will appoint another council member to serve on the Utility Board at that time.
  • Council Discussed burned house near the intersection of Main and Boone St. Mayor talked to the owner, who was Ill with cancer, the owner has sold it, new owner is in the process of cleaning up the property.
  • Council Member Lisa Schaeffer inquired of status of Car lot on Pike St., owner said previously that he was working on cars, but it has progressed to a Junk Yard. Attorney Bud Adams will investigate options.
  • Council Member Matt Brown provided the city a check for $3,600, proceeds from the Rise above Basketball tournament.
  • Meeting adjourned at 8:26pm

    I hope the council will take action on the house behind the fire station. It’s an eyesore and needs cleaned up.
