Hornets sting 17 students, 3 adults on field trip

An elementary school field trip Thursday at Saunders Springs Nature Preserve in Radcliff went awry after hornets attacked.
Seventeen third-graders from Woodland Elementary School and three adults were stung, HCS spokesman John Wright said. All students and three adults were taken to Hardin Memorial Hospital for treatment and later released.
Wright said three third-grade classrooms went on a field trip to Saunders Springs. While exploring, they walked over a wooden bridge that covered a small creek.
“Unbeknownst to them, there was a hornet’s nest under the bridge,” Wright said in an email. “The children crossing the bridge caused the hornets to attack them.”
Radcliff fire, Radcliff police and Hardin County EMS responded, Wright said. School nurses from Woodland and Radcliff Elementary also were at the scene. One student was transported via ambulance after showing more aggressive symptoms than the others, who were taken to HMH on a school bus.
Other Woodland students on the trip returned to school.
