Rep. Bentley Invited Student at Russell High School to Testify at School Safety Working Group Meeting in Frankfort

FRANKFORT, Ky. (August 22, 2018) – On August 13, Josh Griffith, a student at Russell High School, gave important testimony to a panel of legislators at the Interim Joint Education Committee and the School Safety Working Group August meetings.

Rep. Bentley’s is on the left, Josh Griffith is in the center, and Rep. Tim Moore, of Elizabethtown is on the right.

The School Safety Working Group was formed earlier this year and meets periodically during the 2018 legislative interim period to discuss numerous aspects of school safety. Students from across Kentucky were given the opportunity to come to August’s School Safety Working Group meeting.

During the August meeting, Griffith said Russell High School’s administration regularly speaks with local law enforcement to discuss weak points in the school. Griffith said some of the safety issues corrected at the school through collaboration included implementing measures which prohibits people standing outside of classroom windows from seeing inside and changing lockdown and fire drill procedures.

During the meeting, Griffith was complimented on his professionalism and expertise on the matters.

“I received many accolades on Josh Griffith’s presentation,” said. Rep. Danny Bentley, a member of the House Education Committee. “His representation reflects his leadership ability and the quality of our public schools.”

The School Safety Working Group is a bipartisan 10-member group consists of five state representatives and five state senators. The group will issue a report by the end of December that identifies relevant issues for improving school safety and potential strategies for solving those issues.
