Lawrence Sheriff's Chief Deputy Mark Wheeler, right, earned a statewide safety award but Sheriff Garrett Roberts says "duty first"

This is a letter we received from Sheriff Garrett Roberts who is retiring this year after four successful terms as Lawrence Co. Sheriff:

Mark,

The Ky Transportation Cabinet and Ky Office of Highway Safety, will recognize Officers across the State for their extraordinary efforts to increase, seat belt, child restraint and booster seat usage on Kentucky roadways.

The Governor’s Occupant Protection Enforcement Awards will be held on August 8th in Lexington Ky, with Lawrence Co. Schools starting classes the same day, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office will not be sending their winner of this years award to the ceremony.

We will have him (Mark Wheeler) assisting with the opening day of school so we can ensure our children have a safe first day of school.

The following is a list of Deputies and the number of citations they issued from June 1, 2017 until May 31, 2018.

Chief Deputy Mark Wheeler 105
Sgt. Chuck Jackson 10
Deputy Mack Wilhite 13
Deputy Mason Keefer 40
Deputy Dwayne Bowen 4

Total Office Citations 172

As Sheriff I am Proud of the effort each Deputy has made to ensure the protection of the citizens and children of Lawrence County on our Roadways.

-Garrett
