INEZ, Ky. — Martin Co. Sheriff John Kirk announced on his Facebook page today that his office cannot collect property taxes and that he doesn’t know when he will be able to do so.

Sheriff John H. Kirk

Here is the message SHERIFF KIRK sent to taxpayers:

” I hate to inform the taxpayers of this county that we can’t collect your taxes. Our provider that we contract with has cut our tax program off until we pay them.

If you haven’t paid your taxes yet, I’m sorry for the inconvenience. I don’t know when we will be able to collect taxes again.

I have been told that the county has no money to pay the Sheriff’s office bills. This will probably affect all our taxing districts such as the school board, Health Department , Fire and 911 fees, Library, Extension office. If there is no money we can’t operate.

We turn all our fees over to the county and depend on them to pay the bills. We receive several calls per week wanting us to pay our outstanding debts. We can’t pay if we don’t have money.

If something isn’t done quickly we are going to have to make some tough decisions.”

COUNTY JUDGE/EXECUTIVE KELLY CALLAHAM could not be reached for comment this morning. We will continue to try to contact him. Check back late.
