Vinson tells of trip to Guatemala by local mission group

Rotary met for its weekly meeting on Thursday, December 14th at the Southern Spoon, as it will for the entire month of December. As always the meeting began with a prayer, Pledge of Allegiance and reciting the four-way test, as everyone was in Christmas spirit, those present sang Christmas carols.

President Chris Jobe then announced the speaker, Lawrence Vinson,  Angela and Jordan McQuire and Trey Dotson came to speak about a mission trip to Guatemala in June, 2017 by a group from the Louisa United methodist Church.

Popular Louisa resident Lawrence Vinson was the speaker at Louisa Rotary last Thursday. They were among 19 people who made the trip. For some it was their first, and others have been going for as long as 8 years. They played a video of pictures they had taken and it just gave everyone an idea of the smiles that it brought to each face they came across.

Vinson spoke on how the people there didn’t have anything, but were happier than most people he speaks to on a daily basis here in the U.S.

He also said they may not know the Bible, but they know God.

“As much our visits bless the people in the village, we are blessed even more by the experience,” Vinson said. “There are about 200 to 250 children in the village where we were.”

A Guatemalan woman cooks over an open fire...Vinson said the children played with rocks for toys, and because they didn’t know anything different, they are happy to do so.

He spoke about how the water was controlled by the government and how it only comes on once a month. “I never realized how much we as Americans take water for granted, let alone clean water,” Vinson said.

This time they visited, they got to experience the water coming on.

“It was an experience to say the least,” he explained.

Some of the LUMC mission group members ... Lawrence Vinson, Melissa Reynolds Dotson, Hayden Kiser, Tammie Vinson, Lydia Workman, Lincoln Smith, Melissa Fowler and Mollie Workman.

Overall, it was a touching story, one of my favorites of all I’ve heard while covering Rotary meetings…

After speaking, Jobe thanked them for sharing their experience and invited the Rotarians to go with him to present a check for $650.00 to God’s Pantry.

With that the meeting was adjourned for the week, and year.
