…Hosts Annual Book Giveaway At Lawrence County Public Library

LOUISA, KY. — The Louisa Chapter NSDAR 4056-KY, celebrated National Family Literacy Day Saturday, November 4, 2017 by hosting its annual book giveaway at Lawrence County Public Library. This is the 3rd year for the annual event.

DAR celebrates Family Literacy day

DAR members were greeted by a line of people waiting to get into the conference room of the library to receive the free books. Once inside, participants were greeted by a costumed character, Elmer the Elephant, balloons, patriotic décor, door prizes, a children’s corner, and over 2000 books to choose from, all of which were free. Books were available for all age groups and several genres. By the end of the event, over 1500 books had been given away.

Louisa DAR members Evelyn DeBoard and Myrtle Walker with Elmer the Elephant.

Scout Master Bobby Preston attended the event with his daughter. He plans on using the books obtained through this event to establish a library for his troop. He was able to collect several science books to add to his collection of books for the troop’s project.

Several Louisa Chapter DAR members worked together to plan this event. The committee included members Lynn Courtney, Nancy Bush, Myrtle Walker, Peggy Nelson, and Evelyn DeBoard. The State Literacy Chair for the DAR is Patricia Hatfield.

Regent Sabrina May stated, “Education is one of the benchmarks of the National Society of the Daughters Of The American Revolution. These ladies did an excellent job of planning this event and helping to spread the joy of literacy in this community. This is what Louisa Chapter DAR is all about, members helping members for the good of the community we serve.”
