LOUISA, KY — City officials and volunteers have completed another community project in Louisa. According to Mayor Harold Slone, the project has been a success in building partnerships and community involvement. The project is part of the Mayor’s city-wide ReDiscover Louisa initiative and is included in the master plan for the riverwalk project. The project involved installing an observation deck at Lockview Park along with an informational kiosk explaining the history of the 1st needle dam made in America.

“I want to be sure the community realizes how many partners took part in this project, these type grants are awarded based on community partnerships and being a part of long term revitalization planning,” the mayor said.

According to Mayor Slone The DAR – Daughters of American Revolution – in Louisa was summoned to do the historical research about the locks and dam. This included photos and documentation of its history.

The Louisa DAR provided historical research about the lock and dam and provided pictures displayed at the site.

A Louisa based non-profit organization, RISEAbove, contributed with volunteers to help with the construction.

Individuals from Addiction Recovery Care (ARC) who are in recovery from substance use disorder also volunteered.

Workers from the City of Louisa pitched in to do their part and some volunteered on weekends to help. “The project would not have been possible without the grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission, The Center for Rural Development, and the support of Louisa City Council,” Slone said.

The deck will also include kiosks for viewer's use.

A dramatic view of the historic locks and dam on the Big Sandy River is available from the observation deck.
