PRESTONSBURG, Ky. – Stephanie Music, a senior at Floyd Central High School and currently enrolled in the Floyd County Early College Academy at Big Sandy Community and Technical College, made a worthwhile donation at the Mayo Campus – it was a donation to benefit the lives of children.

She didn’t give money, but something more personal: nine ponytails of hair.

“Last year, someone complimented me on how pretty my hair was. I thought to myself that I would like to donate my hair again to Wigs for Kids,” said Stephanie. Nearly a decade earlier, as a third grader, Stephanie made her first donation.

Wigs for Kids is a foundation that has changed the lives of the children since 1981. Wigs for Kids helps children who suffer hair loss for various reasons, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and Alopecia. Custom hair pieces are created with no expense to the family.

Briana Dotson very carefully cuts one of the ponytails for the Wigs for Kids donation.

Stephanie made an appointment at the BSCTC Cosmetology department and with the help of cosmetology student Briana Dotson and coordinator Vanessa McKenzie, Stephanie donated nine ponytails of her hair to Wigs for Kids. Each ponytail was 18 to 19 inches long. This donation cut was a first for Briana and is one of about three donations per semester that happens in the department.

“I think this is a great thing for her to do and I am so glad she allowed us to be part of it,” said Vanessa McKenzie, Cosmetology Program Coordinator.

“Her father and I are so proud of her for donating her hair. We think it’s a wonderful gesture,” said her mother Lisa Music, Professor of Mathematics at BSCTC.

Stephanie poses with one of the ponytails she donated.

Stephanie will complete the requirements for both her Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees in December 2017. She will graduate from college at BSCTC and graduate from her high school as the first graduating class of Floyd Central High School in May 2018.
