LAWRENCE COUNTY – September 7, 2017 – People who use KY 1 in Lawrence County from KY 201 to the Carter County line face significant traffic delays for the next two weeks and minor delays through mid-November, according to Mike Blevins, engineering technologist at Highway District 12. Traffic through this work zone will be directed by signs and flaggers.
Replacement of four cross drains from mile point 12.820 (KY 201) to mile point 14.140 (Carter County line) will impact traffic for the next two weeks. Blevins explained that the drains are underneath the pavement, so the blacktop has to be cut and removed to pull out the old drains and install new ones. Traffic cannot drive through the work zone while this work is under way.
At the same time, state contractors will be replacing entrance pipes, pulling ditchlines, and widening the shoulder of the road. This work will continue into November, but will have only minor impact on traffic.
School buses will be accommodated, Blevins said, both morning and afternoon. Other traffic should find an alternate route for the next two weeks to avoid lengthy delays. After the cross drain work is finished, all drivers should continue to slow down in the work area, be alert for work crews and heavy equipment, and be prepared for intermittent, brief delays.
