Bill JacksonEagle Ridge Golf League News

The first week of the Playoffs are over, and the Finals will be played on August 8 to determine the League Champion.

The regular season has ended and the 1st week of the two-week playoff is now in the books. The two-week playoff is seeded in the same manner as you would seed a basketball or football tournament. The outcome of this week’s play will determine the League Champion. All players must be in attendance for the final round. No make-ups can be used and if one is not present, his round will be forfeited.

Currently, the league leader is Charlie Curnutte with 43 points, followed by Bill Jackson with 41 points, and Bill England with 40 points. Starting in the 1st round of the championship, Charlie had a 2 point lead; after playing the first round, he retained a 2 point lead by winning his threesome. This means that Charlie cannot lose the championship; he can only fall to co-champion. This would require me to win the threesome, Bill England to come in second and Charlie to come in third, a doubtful occurrence. Absent that scenario Charlie will be our champion. Charlie has played great all year; our “Mr. Consistency” and is deserving of the award.

This coming Tuesday we will play the front 9 of the course to finish our season.. This is the standard format for all league championships. All data will be furnished the Levisa Lazer after the banquet, which will be the week following the championship. Our participation is down, with six players having to drop out due to injuries or family tragedies. Regardless we have had a good year. And, we have had the best scoring since the league was formed. Imagine, 2 players having a -2 handicap. I would never have believed it!

Now let’s examine Tuesday’s results. First, Charlie Curnutte shot a sweet 42, a respectable and competitive round. Charlie’s handicap is a very sound 8, giving him a net score of 34, 2 under par. Troy Hughes was in the same threesome as Charlie and he shot a gross 34, but since his handicap is -2, Troy had a net 36. He came in 3rd in the threesome with Milton Terry shooting a net 35. Golf and handicaps, what strange results they create.

Continuing to talk about our -2 handicap players, Troy shot another 2 under par, and Tom Copley shot an even par 36. Our player of the night was neither of the 2 mentioned players, the player who tore up the course was Dean Steinbring. Dean shot a gross 1 under 35 and eagled number 9 after hitting the flag on with his drive and having the ball stop beside the hole. He also had a birdie on number 10. Pretty good huh?

Now listen to the rest of the score. Dean carries an 8 handicap, and he just shot a 1 under par 35. When his handicap is applied, he shot a net 27. Now I call that golfing your ball. Congratulations Dean. This may be a league record. I will go through the data.

Now for the results of August 1, I must say it was a great night to play golf although my score did not show it.

The following are the scores:

July 25, 2017

Scores

Low Net Score (27) Dean Stinebring

Low Gross Score (34) Troy Hughes

Longest Drive (#7) Dan Preece

Fewest Putts (11) Tom Copley

Skills Competition

Closest to the pin, 2nd shot (#11) Dan Preece

Longest Putt (#14) Tom Copley

Par 3, Closest to pin (#12) Troy Hughes

Par 3, Closest to pin (#8) Troy Hughes

Skins Troy Hughes

Presently, we have the two players holding the lowest golf handicaps in league history. Troy Hughes and Tom Copley both with a handicap of minus 2. Regardless of who wins the championship, these two players have set a new standard.

The 3 players having the most points going into the championship are as follows:

Charlie Curnutte 43

Bill Jackson 41

Bill England 40

Notice that two of these three players are geezers, and Charlie isn’t one of them.

The schedule for night one, the results I just reported, was set by seeding. For the final evening, the threesomes are determined by standings.

Bill Jackson
