Lawrence Co. Board of Education Monday July 17, 2017

PRESTON ASKS FOR NEW DRUG EDUCATION CURRICULUM

The Lawrence Co. BOE met on Monday July 17, 2017. Those in attendance were Dr. Robbie Fletcher Superintendent, Heath Preston Chairman, Garnet Skaggs Member, Maddlene Roberts Member, Jim See Member and Barbara Robinson Member. The meeting was called to order after the pledge and opening prayer.

Dr. Fletcher updated the Board on several communication items.

*  The new gym floor for Fallsburg Elementary School is just about complete. FES Principal Sara Bowens stated, ” The floor should be finished by Thursday morning and then next week the center court will be painted. It’s just about done!” The flagpole has also been moved and Veteran Jim Downs will have the honor of raising the flag on the first day of school.

*  Mr. Fletcher continued his review by informing the Board and public that the contractor for the Blaine Elementary School blacktop project has retracted his bid due to a misunderstanding of the project. The project may have to be re-bid but is on hold for now.

*  There could be potential cuts to the Title l/Title ll funding in the amounts of $125,000 and $70,000 respectively. LCHS continues to score lower than the state average on ACT’s but did improve 0.7 on the composite score to a final score of 18.8.

*  The Lawrence Co. Schools will be recognized at a KASA conference as a North Star District.

{There was no public comment.}

BOE CHAIRMAN HEATH PRESTONChairman of the Board, Heath Preston proposed to Dr. Robbie Fletcher and Curriculum Supervisor Dr. Cassandra Webb to develop a new curriculum for every student in the school system regarding Drug Abuse Prevention and Safety.

“We have education experts with doctorates and years of training and experience in how to educate children and I have asked to team up with experts in the drug prevention and safety field to create grade appropriate programs.” said Mr. Preston.

Preston said the goal of such education programs will be to increase the awareness and help to combat the community’s growing drug problem.

Preston has vocalized his objection to the implementation of the Harm Reduction Program submitted by the Lawrence Co Health Department.
