Man 68 shoots 70 year- old in 4-wheeler incident

Ashland, Ky. (February 25, 2017) – The Kentucky State Police Post 14 Ashland is investigating a shooting which occurred on Thursday, February 24, 2017 at approximately 1158 am.

The Kentucky State Police Post 14 was notified by Carter County 911 of a shooting on Offhill Lane in the Olive Hill community of Carter County. Troopers responded and determined Michael Offhill, age 68, of Offhill Lane shot Michael Applegate, age 70, of Gregoryville, multiple times with a shotgun.

Evidence and witness statements support Offhill was operating an ATV on Offhill Lane when Applegate drove in close proximity to him leading to an altercation between both individuals. It was determined both individuals were armed with firearms during the altercation. Applegate, after being shot, drove to the Valley BP and reported the incident.

Applegate was flown to Cabell Huntington Hospital where he is in critical condition.

Due to the circumstances surrounding the incident no arrests have currently been made.

Additional details surrounding the incident are currently not available for release.

The case remains under investigation by Detective David Boarman.
