BSCTC LAUNCHES LINEMAN, FIBER OPTICS, CDL AND OSHA CLASS

Fiber Class Group Big Sandy Community and Technical College’s Workforce Solutions division held an orientation for its Lineman, Fiber Optics, CDL and OSHA combined program on Friday, February 17 on its Hager Hill campus.

HAGER HILL Ky. – Big Sandy Community and Technical College’s (BSCTC) Workforce Solutions division launched its Lineman, Fiber Optics, CDL and OSHA combined program on Friday, February 17 on its Hager Hill campus.

Fourteen students are enrolled in the 12-week program, which provides training and certifications in Lineman, Fiber Optics, CDL, OSHA and CPR and first aid. Additionally, students will earn two state flagging certifications and take the National Career Readiness Certification exam.

“This training is truly employer driven,” said Danny Tonkin, director of business and industry at BSCTC. “We’ve worked with companies that our leading the Kentucky Wired project and leveraged their resources to make sure our training targets the needs of business and industry.”

BSCTC’s Fiber Optics program has received national attention and has attracted students from 13 states. Students in this class will earn the following certifications: Fiber Optics Technician, Fiber Optics Testing and Maintenance, Fiber Optics Splicer and Fiber Optics Outside Plant/Cabling.

Sally Porter, senior administrative assistant for Workforce Solutions at BSCTC, expressed her appreciation to career advisers working for Big Sandy Community Action Program, the Kentucky Career Center, the Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program, Inc. and Workforce West Virginia for their collaboration and partnership in this endeavor.

“A lot of our participants are displaced from coal and other industries,” she said. “We have an expansive and responsive network of employment specialists that provides services to our participants before, during and after their training.”
