Russell, Ky. —  The old saying it’s hard to beat a team three times in one year reared it’s ugly head once again as Lewis Co. ( 3-11 ) outlasted Lawrence Co. ( 10-6 ) by the score of 64-59 in the final game of the Marvin Meredith Classic Saturday night at Russell high school. The Dawgs had beaten the Lions twice this season by the scores of 84-67 and 92-69 but couldn’t overcome a slow start and foul trouble in this one.

Lawrence Co. fell behind 17-12 after one period and 28-24 at halting as they came out ice cold from the field.

In the second half the shooting picked up as did the foul trouble. The Dawgs managed to tie it up at 45 apiece heading to the final period. Timmy Dalton fouled out around the four minute mark on a questionable call under the basket that had Coach York and the Bulldog faithful in an uproar.

LC kept it close after that and had a chance for the lead with under 30 seconds to play when a go ahead three pointer bounced off the back iron and the Dawgs had to foul to set the final margin. The Dawgs had three players foul out and one leave the game because of injury.

Timmy Dalton led the Dawgs with 30 points, Trey Dotson tallied 14 points, Alex Gilliam chipped in with 8 points, Jared Wellman scored 7 points. The Dawgs were lights out from the foul line going 20-22 but only made 3 three pointers in the defeat.

Issac Kelly led the Lions from the 16th Region with 18 points.

Lawrence 12 17 21 14 – 59

The Dawgs will dive back into 60th District action on Tuesday night when they travel to Belfry and then host Phelps on Saturday night.

Lawrence Co. Head Coach Travis York

‘COACH’S COMMENT

” I didn’t think we played very hard to start the game but really picked it up as the game went on, we dug ourselves a hole and had a chance to win in the end. A lot of things happened during the game but just couldn’t pull it out.” We haven’t played a lot without Timmy and that’s on me, their will be stretches that he isn’t on the floor and we have to learn how to play without him.” I thought the guys handled it pretty well for the most part.” We have a big one Tuesday night and hopefully we can put this behind us and get a big District win.”
