Lawrence Co. Fiscal Court Special Meeting is a dud, no decision made

Four of the county's six Haulers met with county fiscal court members to hash out an agreement on a $2 month raise in trash hauling fees in Lawrence County. The magistrates put off acting on the matter until the next regulat meeting in january.

The Lawrence Co. Fiscal Court met Tuesday evening, December 27, 2016 for a special meeting. Those in attendance were Judge John Osborne, Earl Boggs Magistrate, John J Lemaster Magistrate, Morris Howard Magistrate, Mike Hogan County Attorney, Chris Jobe County Court Clerk.

After the pledge and opening prayer, the meeting was called to order.
Motion made by John Lemaster, second by Earl Boggs to appoint Catrina Vargo to the Southeast Kentucky Mountain Trail Coalition Committee. Ms. Vargo works on economic development part time for Lawrence County.

The county garbage haulers were in attendance to present their reasons for an increase in the county garbage rates. They were asking for an increase of $12.00/mo. for seniors to $15.00/mo. and from $16.00 to $20.00 for regular customers.

The Big Run Landfill has raised the dumping fees for all garbage haulers but there was some concern expressed that different haulers were experiencing several different rates based on tonnage.

A representative from Endicott Sanitation stated, “My rates are going up about $8.00 per ton.”

The rates apparently are based on what type of trash is being hauled. All of the haulers stated that they were hauling household garbage. There were four haulers present. Endicott Sanitation, Express Sanitation, Apple Valley Sanitation and Thompson Sanitation were in attendance and expressed their concerns and hope for an increase. Marcum Sanitation and Perkins Sanitation were not represented.

Lawrence Co. Judge/Executive John Osborn said one of the haulers was not in favor of raising the rates.

“Dennis Marcum is not for a raise at this time due to his customers having difficulty paying the current rates,” Osborne quoted Marcum as saying.

After a discussion among the court members it was decided that they would talk to the Big Run Landfill before making a decision on a rate increase.

The purpose of the conversation is to inquire about the differences in the haulers rates.

A motion was made by John J. Lemaster and second by Earl Boggs to table the discussion. The topic will be discussed at the next regular meeting of the fiscal court.

The meeting was then adjourned
