Dawgs runner up in Derby classic, Eagles beat LC again in ‘nailbiter’

Timmy Dalton poured in 44 in the close loss in Derby Classic.Dalton breaks his own single game scoring record

Raceland, Ky. —  In a rematch of a games played a couple weeks ago it was Johnson Central ( 9-1 ) escaping with a 75-73 nail biter over Lawrence Co. (9-5)  to claim the Derby classic championship played at Raceland high school on Wednesday night. 

LC Senior Timmy Dalton has scored 528 points on the season and is scoring 37.7 points per game. 

The Dawgs fell behind early but crawled all the way back to at least have a shot to win in the end. Timmy Dalton continued his torrid scoring pace and almost willed his team to victory by pouring in 44 points in the night. Dalton went 17-21 from the field.

Trey Dotson and Cameron Maynard had 8 points each, Jared Wellman tallied 7 points, Tyler Maynard 4 points and Alex Gilliam with 2 points. The Dawgs were 11-15 and made 2 three pointers in the contest. 

Mason Blair had 31 to lead Johnson Central. 

Lawrence Co. 92 Lewis Co. 69

In the semifinals of the Derby classic played at Raceland on Tuesday night it was Timmy Dalton breaking his own single game scoring record of 51 points by scoring pouring in 53 points to lead his team to the lopsided victory. Jared Wellman tallied 15 points, Tyler Maynard 7 points, Trey Dotson scored 6, Alex Gilliam 5 points, Chase Sartin 3 points, Westin Hardin and Jordan Johnson 2 each, Alex Ratliff 1 point. Dawgs hit 12-17 from the line and notched 6 three pointers in the victory. 

Lawrence Co. 77 Fairview 55

In the opening round of the Raceland Derby classic on Monday night it was all Lawrence Co. in this one. The Dawgs had eight different players hit the scoring column lead by Timmy Dalton with 29 points. Trey Dotson scored a career high 17 points, Jared Wellman tallied 12 points, Chase Sartin had 6, Tyler Maynard scored 5, Cameron Maynard 4 points, Alex Gilliam and Westin Hardin had 2 each. The Dawgs went 6-15 from the line and made 5 three’s. 

Southwestern 80 Lawrence Co. 69

On Saturday morning in the Kentucky Bank Challenge played at Rowan Co. it was the undefeated Warriors picking up the win over Lawrence Co. despite Timmy Dalton pouring in 39 points. Jared Wellman tallied 15 points, Trey Dotson chipped in with 10 points, Alex Gilliam and Cameron Maynard had 2 each, Tyler Maynard hit one free throw. LC went 7-12 from the line and hit 6 three pointers. 

Madison Southern 74 Lawrence Co. 70

On Saturday evening in the Dawgs second game of the day it was the Eagles getting the win. Timmy Dalton scored 41 to keep LC close. Tyler Maynard hit double figures with 11 points, Alex Gilliam tallied 6 points, Trey Dotson and Jared Wellman had 5 each, Cameron Maynard had 2 points. The Dawgs hit 16-19 from the line and finished with 6 three’s in the loss. 

The Dawgs will be off until January 3rd when they host Raceland on a Tuesday night.

“… We are playing really hard. Giving great effort. I am really pleased at where we are at halfway through the season. Tim continues to put up historic numbers. Really doing a good job of leading us and doing everything he can to help us win.”

Derby Classic Champs, Johnson Central. Central senior guard Mason Blair was named the MVP. He has already signed with Pikeville College to pay BB for them next year.
