ACTC Makes Top 100 List
Ashland Community and Technical College has received national recognition as one of the top two-year colleges in the country.
Community College Week has listed ACTC as a Top 100 two-year institution in the number of one-year certificates awarded. This is the third consecutive year that the college was listed in the one-year certificate category.
ACTC was also listed as a Top 50 two-year institution in the number of associate degrees awarded for science technologies/technicians. ACTC has received this recognition for several years and is the only Kentucky college on the list.
“It is rewarding to receive these recognitions of our success in serving students,” said Dr. Kay Adkins, ACTC President and CEO. “Each credential represents a student achievement in attaining knowledge and skills that can be used for life.”
The Community College Week ratings were based on the number of credentials and degrees awarded in the 2014-15 academic year by over 5,000 two-year institutions. The ratings recognize the focus by government, businesses and educators on increasing the number of college graduates who are prepared for the current and future workforce.

ACTC Offers Express Enrollment for Spring
Ashland Community and Technical College is offering a one-stop enrollment opportunity on November 21 and 22 for new students who want to start in Spring Semester.
New students can come to the College Drive and Technology Drive Campuses for one-on-one advising about enrollment, financial aid and class scheduling. They can learn about college programs, complete orientation, take a campus tour and schedule testing if needed. Testing will also be offered at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 21, at the College Drive Campus only.
“We know that many prospective students are uncertain about how to enroll, and we are trying to make the process as easy as possible,” said Steve Woodburn, Dean of Student Success and Enrollment Services. “We wanted to offer this opportunity before the holiday season begins.”
Students who enrolled this fall but have not registered for spring are invited to come meet with an advisor and register for class.

Practical Nursing Students Screen School Children
ACTC Practical Nursing students conducted height/weight, hearing and vision screenings for nearly 500 students at Russell Independent Schools in October. The screenings were conducted by the 30 students in ACTC’s first semester Nursing Fundamentals class.
“This is the third year in a row that we’ve helped with the screenings,” said Terri Ratliff, Program Coordinator. “This is a great partnership that helps our students while helping the schools.”
“The benefit to our students is that they get to practice assessment skills,” Ratliff said. “Our program requires clinical experiences with clients of all ages, and school screenings give them pediatric assessment experience.”
Schools conduct screenings to detect problems that might require further attention. “The school nurse at Russell asked if we could participate again,” Ratliff said. “Without ACTC’s help, the schools would have to coordinate parent volunteers to do the screenings. Obviously it helps for us to be the volunteers, and because we bring 10 PN students at a time, we can screen students more quickly and get them back to class sooner,” Ratliff said.
Through a Memorandum of Agreement with the Russell School System, the screening hours count as clinical hours for the PN Program.
“It was a great educational experience,” said Brittany Grubb, a PN student from Ashland. “I worked with nine and ten year olds, and it was different having to communicate on their level. It was good practice to make sure they understood instructions and what we were doing.”
“And is was fun,” Grubb added.
The Practical Nursing Program prepares students for the national license exam and jobs as a Licensed Practical Nurse in hospitals, nursing homes, convalescent homes, doctor’s offices and other medical care facilities.
ACTC Will Host Veterans’ Day Program
ACTC will honor its veteran students on Friday, Nov. 11, with a luncheon from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Technology Drive Campus. The speaker will be Pastor Stanley McDonald, Jr., Senior Pastor at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and a USAF veteran. This semester, ACTC has 87 veterans enrolled as students.

ACTC Closed November 8
ACTC will be closed Tuesday, Nov. 8, for Election Day. Normal class and office hours resume Wednesday, Nov. 9.
