Harris, former teacher at Lawrence County and Teacher Leader with Ky Department of Education, accepts position as assistant principal at Rowan County Middle

Mr. Joe Harris, a 2004 graduate of Sheldon Clark High School, resigned July 14, 2016 from Lawrence County Schools to accept a position as assistant principal of Rowan County Middle school in Morehead, Ky. He and his family will be relocating there this month.

Rowan County Middle is 5.5 years old and the current enrollment is around 680.

Joseph and Miranda HarrisHarris is the husband of Miranda Salyer Harris of Webbville, KY and is the father of two children. His oldest will be attending McBrayer Elementary in Rowan County.

Last year Mr. Harris worked half a day at Lawrence County High School and half a day with the Kentucky Department of Education. Before working in that role, he was a full time English teacher at LCHS for four years where he was involved in various leadership efforts at both the school and state level as a Hope Street Group Kentucky Teacher Fellow and an Innovative Teacher Leader.

“Mr. Harris has been a valued member of the Lawrence County Instructional Team during his time here,” Lawrence Co. Supt. Dr. Rob Fletcher said.  “Even though he will be missed by his colleagues and by his students, we wish him the best in his new role in Rowan County.”

Harris has previous teaching experience with Greenup County schools and was a drop-out prevention coordinator at Sheldon Clark High.

Rowan Co. Middle SchoolMr. Harris earned an Associates Degree at Big Sandy CTC, a Bachelor of Secondary English Education degree from Morehead State, a Master in LBD from Georgetown College, a Specialist of Education in Instructional Leadership from Morehead State, and is currently enrolled in the Educational Doctoral program at Morehead State.

Mr. Harris provided the following comments about his decision:

“…The decision to move from a community you are deeply rooted in and where you truly love the people doesn’t come lightly. It comes with much prayer and guidance from God. I am so thankful that His perfect plans are higher than my own. I will truly miss the Lawrence Co community, especially the school and my church, but I rest in knowing that the steps of the righteous are directed by Him and He never leads us wrong. (Psalm 37:23)…”

He also stated:

“Lawrence County Schools pushed me to grow as an educator and will always hold a place in my heart. The students, my colleagues, and the parents are amazing and I pray continued success and blessing on them…”
