DEAR JOHN: TORCHLIGHT ROAD IS FALLING IN — AGAIN

The County fiscal court has been asked over and over to fix the road at Torchlight and when they finally got it fixed (their words) it started sliding over the hillside before the contractors got their equipment moved.

DEAR JOHN (Osborne),

The Torchlight road repairs that the state pitched in $45,000 for is apparently already a failure.

Residents have called and called and wonder why the road has fallen in again after the repairs.

There should have been steel beams driven into the side that is sliding into the ravine but all they did was clear a small portion of hillside on the opposite side of the slip and make room to widen the road, which did not work.

I realize there are a lot of road work that needs to be done in Lawrence County but it seems that this damage is from oil and gas trucks traveling the road daily overweight and at a fast speed. And I’ll bet the county can make the oil and gas company pay for fixing this road and many others as was discussed in fiscal court a couple weeks ago.

When Torchlight road falls in it cuts the residents completely off from getting in and out. School will be starting in a month and busses will not be able to use the road. In fact, these people can’t even get their mail delivered because of this.

My friend Daisy Vanhoose, 73, lives in the last house in that hollow and she has many friends and relatives that are afraid to visit her because of the road and the truck traffic. Whose side are you on John? Companies or the people?

Please consider calling the contractors back to the area and have them fix the road correctly this time before the county gets another lawsuit over the oil and gas traffic on a road not designed or designated for such.

Thanks,

Mark Grayson
