Employees at bankrupt Alpha’s Enterprise Mining subsidiary were notified Monday that Thursday would be their last day on the job.
Company officials told employees at Enterprise’s Roxana coal preparation plant in Letcher County and EMC9 underground mining operation near Redfox in Knott County that the shutdown, which had been planned for September, was put on the fast track because Alpha was unable to renew its coal lease with mineral owner Kentucky River Coal Corporation.
The EMC9 mine is the only Alpha-owned mine left that feeds coal to the Roxana plant.
