LCHS Lady Dawgs District Champs 2016

Lawrence County Lady Bulldogs, District 60 Champions 2016

Pond Creek, Ky.–  For the first time in school history the Lawrence Co. Softball team has won back to back district titles after coming from behind to beat Belfry 9-2 in the championship game on Tuesday night. The Lady Dawgs ( 24-14 ) will advance to the 15th Region tournament held next week at Shelby Valley.

After falling behind 2-0 after the first two hitters of the game crossed home plate for Belfry tournament MVP Ciana Bowen shut the door on the Lady Pirates. LC got single runs in the 3rd and 5th innings and thought they had took the lead on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and one out but the runner from third was called out for leaving early negated the go ahead run. In the bottom of the 6th the Bulldogs exploded for seven runs to put the game and secure the championship.

McKenzie Giompalo went 3-3 and scored three runs, Bowen was on base all three times with two bunt singles, Haleigh Peck was on twice, Addy Frazier was on twice, Keyeraha Bowen had an RBI, Ally Marcum had two hits and scored once, Amber Triplett had one hit and scored once, Natalie Rice was on twice, Abby Fletcher had one hit, Kassidy Cavins scored once, Halli Caudill had a stolen base and run scored. Everybody in the lineup contributed in the victory. Layken Chapman made a nice running catch to save a run as well.

Belfry dropped to 19-16 on the season but will advance to the 15th region tournament next week.

Lawrence Co. Head Coach Kenny Horn

COACH’S COMMENTS

“… Coming back from an early deficit shows that we have improved, early in the year we would have folded.” I got a little history with the third base umpire in 2008 he tossed one of our girls in the region semifinals and last night he disrespected one of my coaches which is uncalled for and then tonight he took a run away from us.” But really proud of my team they showed a lot of heart tonight.”

Lawrence Co. Catcher Natalie Rice

“… Honestly when we have fell behind early in the season it was hard for us to comeback but tonight we came back and did what we had to do we got the win and really proud of our team.” It’s tournament time and we are really focused we have to do what ever it takes to move on, we have a lot of heart and I can’t wait for the region tournament”

Lawrence Co. Pitcher Ciana Bowen

” …After we fell behind we had to work even harder, stay focused and keep everybody up in the dugout.” Once we tied it up had to keep them at two runs and our defense was great tonight.” When he gave me the bunt sign I just tried to get it down to score the run and help my team.” Can’t wait for next week.”

Lawrence Co. Centerfielder McKenzie Giompalo

“…Been in a little slump so I just tried to help my team any way I can so glad I could do that tonight.” When we fell behind I have confidence in my team that we would comeback and we did, I try to be a leader on the team and a role model and keep everyone up and not to let anyone get down.” I’m excited for the region tournament.”
