The City of Louisa has received 2 new grants to increase recreational opportunities in the city by improving City Parks and promoting Cycling.

Mayor Harold Slone has announced that the City has been awarded the Flex-E-Grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC). This grant will be used for updates at the City Park, specifically, rubber material under the swing sets and playground equipment, and a total redo of the basketball court, which is used by many of the city’s residents.

Also in the plans for this Summer, the City has organized activities to take place at the new basketball court. “ I have partnered with Matt Brown to organize and conduct shooting and fundamentals clinics for the kids as well as 3 on 3 tournaments for kids and adults this summer”, Slone said.

Work is Scheduled to begin on the park in the next couple of weeks. (SEE LAZER STORY)

Also announced was the receipt of the Paula Nye Memorial Bicyclist and Pedestrian Education Grant.

This grant provides $7,000 to promote bicycling as a form of recreation. Slone said this grant will be used to “Pay for instructor training so the they can, in turn, teach the kids courses on bike safety, register bicycles with the LPD so if bikes are stolen or found we have record of ownership,  identify and publish bike trails around town for residents and visitors alike and promote bike events in the city.

All of this will be accomplished through a partnership between the Kentucky Bicycle and Bikeway Commission, The City of Louisa, The Louisa Police Department and local cycling enthusiasts.
