Work progresses as crews set beams this week

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 06, 2024) –Progress continues on the $1.8 million project to build a new KY 581 Georges Creek Bridge in Lawrence County as crews begun setting steel beams this week, signifying an important milestone on the project aimed at providing a safer and more reliable route for Lawrence County motorists while supporting economic growth and communities.

Steel beams, weighing a total of 193,305 pounds, were fabricated and painted at a steel plant in North Carolina and delivered to the project site last week.

Following the installation of beams, work will proceed on building the superstructure, which includes the concrete deck and barrier walls. Once this is complete, paving and guardrail installation will occur.

The project, awarded to Bush and Burchett in October 2023, has a tentative  completion date of mid-November 2024. The bridge project includes the construction of a new bridge, along with associated grading, drainage, and surface work.

I used to live on 581 and have very fond memories of the bridge. I remember seeing it underwater a few times 2! Can’t wait for the families on 581 to get and new bridge so they dont have to drive to 645 then 581!!!
