ARC shares life-saving treatment resources on International Overdose Awareness Day

LOUISA, Ky. (Aug. 30, 2024) — On International Overdose Awareness Day (Aug. 31), the Commonwealth’s leading addiction treatment provider Addiction Recovery Care (ARC) is sharing vital resources to help Kentuckians struggling with addiction.

According to the Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy’s 2023 Drug Overdose Fatality Report, there were 1,984 overdose deaths statewide last year. The most prevalent drugs contributing to overdoses were fentanyl (involved in 79.1% of deaths) and methamphetamine (involved in 55.2% of deaths).

“While the last two years have brought welcome news that overdose deaths were in significant decline (with a 9.8% decrease in 2023) across our Commonwealth, there is still much work to be done,” said Matt Brown, ARC Chief Administration Officer and President of ARC Healthcare. “We are still losing nearly 2,000 Kentuckians — friends, family members and neighbors — to the addiction crisis every year, and that’s why our mission is more critical than ever.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists the following as potential signs of an overdose:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, weak, or no breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Cold and/or clammy skin
  • Discolored skin (especially in lips and nails)

While recognizing an overdose can be difficult, experts advise individuals that it is best to treat any suspicious situation like an overdose — immediately calling 911 and administering naloxone, if available.

Since opening its first facility in December 2010, ARC has cared for more than 75,000 individuals. Today, the award-winning provider operates a network of over 30 licensed addiction treatment centers in 25 Kentucky counties.

ARC’s comprehensive, holistic approach to addiction treatment includes a full continuum of care, including detox, residential, transitional, intensive outpatient, outpatient, medically assisted treatment (MAT), vocational rehabilitation, and job training.

If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, please reach out to a caring ARC professional any time at 606-658-8338.
