SEN. WHEELER, REP. MCCOOL SECURE WINDFALL OF FUNDS FOR INEZ ELEMENTARY
Over $12 million in funds heading to Martin County school district for the construction of a new elementary school
FRANKFORT, KY (March 28, 2024) – The following statements can be attributed to Sen. Phillip Wheeler, R-Pikeville, and Rep. Bobby McCool, R-Van Lear, following Wednesday’s final passage of House Bill 6 and the allocation of $12,00,000 to fund the construction of a new elementary school in Inez, Kentucky.
Wheeler statement:
“The allocation of these funds is a monumental win for the families in Martin County,” said Senator Wheeler. “I believe that eastern Kentucky as a whole is providing the best public education to our children in all of the commonwealth, and the residents of the 31st Senate district will continue to enjoy that. Education is the great equalizer in our society, and the road map to success starts with access to quality education. Martin County will now have one of the best elementary schools in the state. I am excited to see this project begin, and its completion will serve as a beacon of opportunity and success.”
McCool Statement:
“As a lifetime educator, Eastern Kentucky’s children have always been my priority in Frankfort,” said Representative McCool. “ I am honored to have played a part in advocating for the funding for the new Inez Elementary School. Modern facilities are essential for creating a positive learning environment and the children of Martin County deserve no less.”

Why in the world is Inez KY getting a new elementary school? I just don’t understand it. Martin County has declining student enrollment and the population of the county is also declining based on the most current US census numbers. There is nothing wrong with the current Inez Elementary School building. I was just in the building a year or so ago and the school building was in very good condition. Lawrence County should have been awarded these funds to replace the Louisa West Elementary school that was built in 1954. This just makes absolutely no sense to me.
Makes no sense. I was just in their school this year as well. Nothing wrong with it. They maintain it well, unlike the Louisa West Elementary School. Don’t start about the double nickel tax either. That has nothing to do with the legislature appropriating funds to build a school. They have three or four courthouses in Inez if which they only need one. One of the smallest communities in the region receiving a boat load of cash from the Capital to buy votes.
Well the double nickle tax didn’t work in Martin county did it? But they get a new school that they don’t need. Still don’t have drinking water. Some days no water. Lawrence County needs a new West Elementary school and Wheeler hasn’t tried to help. They told Fletcher to get the double nickle tax first. Even with that it would be years before it saved up to enough money. I’ll definitely remember this when I vote.
