Tri-State area man busted after chase

KENTUCKY STATE POLICE POST 14 ARREST KENTON COUNTY, KY. MAN ON FELONY DRUGS AND FLEEING CHARGES AFTER OUTRUNNING TROOPERS IN DANGEROUS VEHICLE CHASE, LATER FOUND HIDING ON FOOT IN WOODED AREA IN BOYD COUNTY, KY.

HE OUTRAN THE LAW AND GOT AWAY IN A CAR,  BUT WAS FOUND LATER WHEN HE WAS ELSEWHERE WALKING: BENJAMIN SCOTT LAYNE, 44, OF COVINGTON, KENTUCKY; WAS ARRESTED EVENTUALLY FOUND ON FOOT, AFTER HE SUCCESSFULLY EVADED KY. STATE POLICE IN HIS VEHICLE WHEN TROOPERS ATTEMPTED TO CONDUCT A CRIMINAL INTERDICTION TRAFFIC STOP.
CANNONSBURG, Ky. (December 22, 2023) –Kentucky State Police apprehended a suspect involved in narcotics trafficking following the suspect’s initially successful evading troopers after a dangerous high-speed chase in Boyd County.

On Thursday, December 21, 2023, the Kentucky State Police Post 14 Ashland criminal interdiction team, in collaboration with the Kentucky State Police Canine unit, conducted an interdiction detail in Boyd County. During the operation, KSP troopers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle, which subsequently evaded them. While in pursuit, the troopers witnessed the driver discarding bags of narcotics from the driver side window, which were later recovered. Due to the high speed and heavy traffic, the pursuing roopers made the decision to discontinue the pursuit.

Shortly thereafter, the vehicle was located behind Walmart in Cannonsburg. Troopers established a perimeter in the vicinity of Walmart, and with the assistance of the Kentucky State Police Canine Unit, deployed canine Fabi to track down the suspect. Ultimately, troopers found the suspect, who was identified as Benjamin Scott Layne, 44, of Covington, KY., but who is a local Tri-State native, was apprehended without incident, hiding in a wooded area near residential properties.

Mr. Layne transported to the Boyd County Detention Center and charged with the following:

  • SPEEDING 26 MPH OR > SPEED LIMIT,
  • RECKLESS DRIVING,
  • WANTON ENDANGERMENT-1ST DEGREE-POLICE OFFICER,
  • OPER MTR VEHICLE U/INFL ALC/SUBS (189A.010(1E) – 1ST,
  • TAMPERING WITH PHYSICAL EVIDENCE,
  • TRAFF IN CONT SUB, 1ST DEGREE, 1ST OFF – (< 2 GMS METHAMPHETAMINE),
  • TRAFF IN CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE 1ST OFFENSE (HEROIN),
  • FLEEING OR EVADING POLICE, 1ST DEGREE (MOTOR VEHICLE),
  • FLEEING OR EVADING POLICE, 1ST DEGREE (ON FOOT) and A
  • WARRANT FOR FAILURE TO APPEAR.
