Edgar W. “Teenie” VanHoose, Jr., 80, passed away peacefully at home on Mon., Nov. 27, 2023.

Ed was born in Paintsville, KY. He was preceded in death by his father Edgar W. “Tootie” VanHoose, Sr., mother Flemia Melvin VanHoose, and brother James L. VanHoose.

Ed was a devoted husband, father, Christian, and family man. He was married to Darlene for over 56 years and they enjoyed life, friends, family, and church until the very end. They were members of Broadway Baptist Church for 15 years enjoying bible studies, Wednesday meals, and senior excursions. He loved returning to Louisa each year for the annual class reunion and to the annual VanHoose reunion in Lexington. He truly enjoyed conversations with numerous individuals. Ed never met a stranger and had an unbelievable ability to remember most everyone that took time to converse. In addition, he enjoyed golfing and yard sales. He did both of these hobbies with his brother and/or brothers-in-laws.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Darlene Borders VanHoose, daughter Kellie (Tim) Holland of Midway, KY, son, Sean, (Vickie) VanHoose of Crossville, TN, granddaughter Haley Suggs, brother, Albert (Doshia) VanHoose of Lexington, KY and Aunt Phyllis “Hoot” VanHoose, of Lexington, KY.

Ed was raised in Paintsville and Louisa, KY, graduating from Louisa High School in 1960. He received a BA from Eastern Kentucky and an MA from Morehead State. He spent the majority of his career teaching and coaching high school football in Eastern Kentucky. During his illustrious coaching career, he had stops at Louisa, Pikeville, Johnson Central, Middlesboro, Boyd County and Letcher County. He also spent 12 years in Nashville, TN at Maplewood and McGavock high schools. During his coaching tenure, he influenced numerous young men to further their football careers in college and even the NFL. Not only did he help mold the lives of many young men, Ed was also inspirational to many coaches during this span. He was a Lifetime member of the KHSAA and was inducted into the KHSAA Coach’s Hall of Fame.

Behind his family and faith, his one true passion was football. He enjoyed all aspects of the game that most of us cannot comprehend. Although he sent players all across the country and obviously rooted for them, he was a die-hard University of Kentucky fan traveling near and far to root on the Cats. Ed was also a lifetime member of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Kentucky and the El Hasa Shriners.

Coach Ed ‘Teenie’ VanHoose will be missed by many. Although those of us here are saddened by his loss, we are grateful that he did not suffer. We know that he is rejoicing in Heaven being with those he hasn’t been with in years. Most likely he is already looking for a golf course to play or a football game to watch!

He was a devoted husband, a great father, mentor, hero, and best friend. He was also, a wonderful grandfather, brother, nephew, and cousin. He was a friend to a multitude and loved by many. This is not goodbye because one day we will rejoice again.

Services will be held at Broadway Baptist Church, 2500 Harrodsburg Road, on Fri., Dec. 1, 2023 at 2 pm, with visitation from 11 am to 2 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Broadway Baptist Church.

I’m so sorry to hear about Tennie’s passing. He was a friend all throughout our school years in Louisa, a classmate and a really fun guy at reunions, etc. I missed hearing about his Heavenly assignment but knew he loved the Lord. He was quick to reach out to me with prayer needs and encouragement. He’s home now and is in the presence of his maker. I was blessed by growing up with Tennie and by his family that I knew. May God continue to bless his family as I’m sure he is missed.
