Boyd County man always plays these numbers on Kentucky Lottery… They finally paid off

By Aaron Mudd

A brother and sister in Catlettsburg, located 6 miles south of Ashland in Eastern Kentucky’s Boyd County, hit it big playing the Kentucky Lottery, winning a game’s top prize of $225,000.

According to a Monday Kentucky Lottery news release, Kevin and Kelly Hedrick went in together on a ticket for Cash Ball 225, a daily draw that has players choose four white balls and one Cash Ball or have the machine choose via Quick Pick.

Their ticket ultimately matched all five numbers from the Oct. 24 drawing, which won them the game’s top prize of $225,000.

Kevin Hedrick told state lottery officials he got the news from his father, who looked up the results.

“He recognized they were the numbers I play all the time,” Kevin said.

The winning numbers for the Oct. 24 Cash Ball 225 drawing were 7, 8, 21, 27 and Cash Ball 11.

Siblings Kevin and Kelly Hedrick pose with their big check from Kentucky Lottery after a recent jackpot win on the Cash Ball 225 drawing game. Kentucky Lottery Corp.

Hedrick said he plays the game every day and picks numbers based on loved ones’ birth dates and wedding anniversaries. He delivered the news to his sister, “She said, ‘Wow!’”

“I’ve been playing for years. You always imagine somebody else winning, but not this time,” Hedrick told lottery officials, adding “I’ve always said, ‘You can’t win if you don’t play.’”

According the state lottery, the odds of a jackpot win on the game are 1 in 1.309 million.

After taxes, the two each received $80,442.15, the Kentucky Lottery said.

As for Kevin Hedrick, he plans to use the money to pay some bills and then keep playing.

Meanwhile, the store that sold the winning ticket, Clark’s Pump-N-Shop on State Route 3 in Catlettsburg, will receive $2,250.
