Louisa, Ky. — Turnovers proved costly as Lawrence Co. ( 6-3 ) was upended 22-14 against Boyd Co. ( 5-4 ) at Luke Varney Jr. Memorial Stadium Friday night.

#51 Blake Prater and #77 Luis Chicko are ready to cover the kickoff.

Rhett Holbrook put the Lions on the scoreboard first with a 9 yard touchdown and Maverick Boyd tacked on the PAT for a 7-0 lead with 9:15 to go in the first quarter.

The Lions extended the lead to 9-0 when they tackled Cody Crum on the end zone for a safety with 2:18 to go the first quarter.

Talon Pollack found the end zone from a yard out and Brayden Queen added the PAT and it was Boyd Co. 9-7 with 6:16 left in the first half.

Talon Pollack scored the first touchdown for the Bulldogs Friday.

After a scoreless third quarter Caven Williams gave the Bulldogs the lead on a 2 yard touchdown run and a Queen PAT made it 14-9 with 10:49 left in the ballgame.

Holbrook hit Cole Hicks for a 32 yard touchdown pass to give the Lions the lead back 15-14 with 5:54 left in the game.

On the Bulldogs final drive they got into Lion territory before Hicks picked off a Pollack pass and raced 66 yards to the end zone and Boyd added the PAT for a 22-14 Boyd Co. lead.

Lawrence Co. had one more shot to tie it up but Pollack was intercepted to end the game.

On the ground Cody Crum carried the ball 17 times for 63 yards, Talon Pollack 9 attempts for 58 yards, William McDavid 8 rushes for 40 yards, Caven Williams 3 carries for 13 yards.

Defensive coordinator Zach Botkins talks to his defense during a break in the action.

Keaden Ellis had a big fumble recovery for the Bulldogs on defense.

The Dawgs will close out the regular season on Senior night this Friday at home versus Mason County (6-3).

Boyd Co. will close out the regular season on Friday at home versus defending Class A state champion Pikeville ( 6-2 ).

Lawrence Co. Head Coach Alan Short

COACH’S COMMENTS

“… Obviously not the result that we wanted. Very proud of our team’s effort. Sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce your way.”

“… Boyd County is a very good football team. We expect that our team will learn from this loss and it will make us better down the road.”

“… No time to sit and dwell. We have a really good Mason County team coming in Friday night for Senior night. I know the character and resiliency of our team and we will be ready.”
