Major Traffic Switch Planned for Mountain Parkway on Oct. 9

Multiple roads impacted, expect temporary delays in Magoffin County

SALYERSVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 5, 2023) – A major traffic switch is planned Monday Oct. 9 along a section of the Mountain Parkway in Magoffin County, approximately 10 miles west of Salyersville. Motorists should expect temporary stops and delays throughout the day from mile markers 65 to 68 as crews work to shift traffic from the existing parkway to the new parkway alignment.

Multiple locations and roads will be impacted by the switch and new alignment:

  • Mountain Parkway
    • For eastbound traffic on the Mountain Parkway, the switch will take place at mile marker 65.5, near the twin bridges over Johnson Creek. Motorists will veer right to follow the new road alignment. See photo 1
    • For westbound traffic on the Mountain Parkway, the switch will occur at mile marker 68.4 just before the Cow Creek bridge that goes over the existing parkway. Motorists will veer left to follow the new road alignment. See photo 2
  • KY 134
    • There will be a new access road to KY 134 from the Mountain Parkway just west of the new parkway alignment and the twin bridges over Johnson Creek. This new road is necessary to provide access to KY 134 because the existing access road at mile marker 67.3 will be permanently closed.
  • Cow Creek Road
    • There will be a new intersection located at Cow Creek Road where it crosses the new segment of the Mountain Parkway.  Part of Cow Creek Road, north of the intersection, will also be temporarily closed for bridge and road reconstruction. Motorists should use the new KY 134 access road as a detour. See photo 3

Drivers should slow down and use caution when traveling through all these locations. Signage is in place to alert drivers to the traffic switch, closures and detours.  State troopers will also be on-site at the traffic switch locations for multiple weeks, beginning Oct. 9, to help alert motorists to the road changes.

Construction schedules may be adjusted due to weather or other unforeseen events.

About the Mountain Parkway Expansion

The Mountain Parkway Expansion is a 46-mile transportation improvement project that will create a wider, safer connection between Eastern Kentucky and the rest of the Commonwealth. It is a key transportation project designed to close the only gap in a 400-mile, four-lane, high-speed corridor for commerce and mobility across Kentucky from Pikeville to Paducah.

The project will widen 33 miles of existing parkway to four lanes and extend the parkway by 13 miles between Salyersville to Prestonsburg.
