Dawgs headed to Pond Creek tonight — looking to take control of District

Pond Creek, Ky. — After snapping a long losing streak to state power Belfry last season the Lawrence Co. Bulldogs look to win for the second straight season and take control of the District. 

The Dawgs come in with a record of 4-1 and 1-0 in Class 3A District 8 after a 43-12 home victory over Estill Co. last Friday night. 

The Bulldogs trailed 12-7 at halftime and the defense pitched a second half shutout led by Senior Luis Chicko and his teammates.

Belfry comes in with a record of 3-3 and 1-0 in Class 3A District 8 after a 42-12 win in Salyersville over the Magoffin Co. Hornets last Friday. 

Lawrence Co. ramped up the running game against the Engineers led by Senior Cody Crum who scored two touchdowns and ran for 146 yards. The Dawgs finished with 295 rushing yards and scored four touchdowns on the ground. Freshman Caven Williams had an impressive 60 yard touchdown and Senior QB Talon Pollack also found the end zone.

Crum is the leading rusher with 497 yards and five touchdowns. Senior Will McDavid is second with 328 and three touchdowns. 

The Dawgs have scored 13 rushing touchdowns so far. 

Pollock has completed 30 of 64 attempts through the air for 496 yards and seven touchdowns. His leading receiver is Senior Dalton Runyons with 145 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman Carlo Chicko has caught 13 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Logan Ratliff has 127 yards and caught 7 passes and a touchdown, Senior Jake Derifield has 3 catches for 112 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman Kaden Johnson has 7 catches and one touchdown and Senior Abner Collinsworth has caught one touchdown. 

Belfry who always plays a tough schedule to open the season is sitting with a 3-3 record but have a couple nice wins over perennial power Johnson Central 48-20 and Breathitt Co. 48-14. The Pirates have lost to Class A juggernaut Pikeville 40-21 and Class 6A George Rogers Clark 53-27. 

Belfry is led by #11 Caden Wollum with 758 yards and ten touchdowns. #10 Ace Caudill has 496 yards and five touchdowns. #5 Dre Young has 326 yards and six touchdowns. 

#3 Chase Varney is the Quarterback and he has thrown it 24 times and completed 13 passes for 304 yards and 3 touchdowns. Wollum is the leading receiver with 197 yards and three touchdowns and Caudill has 102 yards receiving and two touchdowns. 

#7 Talon Pollack, #3 Eli Fletcher and #44 Will McDavid walking in front of the crowd before the Estill Co. game last week. 

Lawrence Co. snapped a 24 game losing streak to the Pirates with a 35-21 victory in 2022 and went on to win the District title as well for the first time in a long time.
