LOUISA Ky. — Neighboring Martin County has joined at least ten lawsuits statewide against Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Tic Toc and other social media for supplying posts that harm the mental health of students and personnel.

Students in Martin County have been protesting what they call ‘bullying’, much of which is social media exploited to gain advertising revenue, the 87 page lawsuit filed by a Louisville, Ky firm says.

Although there were parents who testified at a recent board meeting that their children are being bullied at at least three Lawrence County schools. The matter was referred to the board’s attorney, but there have been no protests so far despite no actions by the board.

Here is yesterday’s HL story about the growing statewide problem.

Fayette among Ky. districts suing social media companies over student mental health

MARCH 30, 2023 6:00 AM

At least 11 Kentucky school districts, including Fayette and Jefferson, have recently voted to authorize lawsuits against social media companies, citing negative impacts on students.

“This school district believes it is entitled to compensation for its efforts and resources expended to address and treat the mental health challenges caused by social media,” a resolution from the Fayette school board said when members unanimously voted Monday.

Public schools in Kentucky have been significantly impacted by the crisis from overexposure to social media because school districts are one of the main providers of mental health supports and services for school-aged children, the Fayette school board resolution said.

In addition to Fayette and Jefferson, the Breathitt, Bullitt, Clark, Estill, Jessamine, Larue, Madison, Martin, and Wolfe school boards have voted to pursue litigation, said Ronald Johnson, the attorney who is handling the Kentucky cases.

Adult or not, he’s 100% correct in his comment. Fox News has done more damage to democracy in this country then any other event or groups in history.

    Dear People,
Wake up if it’s happening with children , parents need to control that. If it’s adults well you choose if you go on those pages. It’s time to grown the heck up and realize those sites have no need to protect you. As adults we know how to either speak back or let it roll. Get a gripe of ya kids pages and your own pages. I have a child and I know what he posted when he was a minor. As an adult he is in charge of monitoring. Basically parent and grow up, stop blaming everyone else because you can’t.

All you see is $ signs. Just like the cigarette lawsuits. Nothing goes to the individuals actually harmed. Give it to the state, the schools the government who already raised taxes to pay for the resources.
