Kentucky Power Storm Preparedness Update

Friday, March 3, 2023 – 12:30 p.m.

Weather summary:

Kentucky Power is monitoring severe weather expected to bring widespread strong wind gusts and rain into our eastern and southeastern Kentucky service area. The storm system is expected to produce damaging winds that result in power outages.

Reports show this storm system will bring sustained winds between 40-50 mph, and numerous gusts, some topping 60-70 mph, impacting Kentucky Power’s service territory starting Friday morning and ending Saturday morning. High terrain areas and heavily forested areas are expected to be the most vulnerable to high wind-caused outages.

What we are doing to be prepared:

In advance of the storm system’s expected arrival, we activated all necessary crews, including line employees, contractors and tree workers who are all on alert for the possibility of service restoration work. Mutual assistance resources from outside our territory have already been secured and will assist as needed.

What customers can do to be prepared:

  • Make a plan in the event a power outage occurs. Check with those who are elderly, have children or have medical conditions to ensure they have a plan; and don’t forget about pets.
  • Charge devices such as phones, laptops, portable chargers and other electronics that will help you stay connected.
  • Prepare an emergency kit. At a minimum, include non-perishable food, water, a flashlight, batteries, a battery-powered radio, a first-aid kit and necessary medications.

Stay Safe:

  • Stay away from all downed power lines! Downed lines can carry an electric current that can cause serious or even fatal injuries. If you encounter a fallen wire, keep yourself and others away from it and anything it may be touching. Call 911 and Kentucky Power immediately at 1-800-572-1113 to report.
  • If you plan to use an alternate heat source, ensure it is in good working order and follow all safety pre-cautions. Never operate lanterns, heaters, fuel-fired stoves or burn charcoal without proper ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning and fires.
  • If you use a portable or RV generator, do not plug the generator into your circuit box.
  • Additional safety tips are posted at Safety (kentuckypower.com)

Next Update: 7 p.m.

March 1-7, 2023 is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Kentucky. Severe weather can occur anytime of the year, and can bring many different hazards and impacts to the region. Severe Weather Awareness week is your reminder that you need to be Weather Ready for all types of hazards, such as tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, large hail, lightning, heavy rain, flooding, and high winds. New for 2023, NWS Louisville will feature a day dedicated to Beach Safety. Many people from our state travel for Spring Break and Summer Vacation to the beach, and may not be as prepared for severe weather or beach hazards as the locals are. All week long, the National Weather Service office in Louisville, KY will be sharing information on how to prepare for severe weather, which will be viewable on our social media platforms (Facebook and Twitter). Please Share/Retweet to share this knowledge with others.
