Kentucky Power Winter Storm Preparation

Thursday, December 22, 11:30 a.m.

Weather

Forecasts are predicting arctic temperatures and precipitation, wind, rain and/or snow for many areas of eastern Kentucky through Sunday, Dec. 25.

Summary

Extreme cold, 24 hours of sustained wind in the range of 20-30 mph, and gusts much higher in the range of 40-50 mph, will likely be the biggest threat for outages. The dangerously cold temperatures are a concern for customers, so everyone is urged to make a plan. Should outages occur, crews will be working through the holiday weekend to get everyone restored as quickly as possible.

Storm Response Efforts

Kentucky Power personnel and business partners have been preparing since Monday and will be ready to assess damage and restore power when it is safe to do so.

Customers are urged to prepare for a mix of severe wintry weather. Being prepared ahead of the storm is the first step to keeping your home and family safe. Gather an emergency outage kit that includes:

Flashlights and fresh batteries

Water for drinking and cooking

Camping equipment like sleeping bags, camp stoves and lanterns

Non-perishable food and a manual can opener

If you plan to use a generator, make sure you are following the manufacturers’ instructions and following all safety recommendations.

Instructions for how to manually open your garage door

Important over-the-counter medicines

Charge your cell phone; have a battery back up

Download Kentucky Power’s Mobile App for outage information!

Customers can report outages and check the latest restoration information for their account anytime at kentuckypower.com/outages or by downloading the Kentucky Power mobile app at kentuckypower.com/app. The outage map is updated every 15 minutes. Restoration information is added when known. Click on “View Outage Map” to access the map on a computer, cell phone, or tablet. Customers can report outages online, on their mobile device or to our Customer Operations Center at 1-800-572-1113.

Customers also can get specific information about outages via text message and/or email by subscribing to Kentucky Power outage alerts. To sign up, please visit www.kentuckypower.com/alerts. Information also is posted on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/KentuckyPowerand on Twitter at twitter.com/KentuckyPower or @KentuckyPower.

Next update: Friday, December 23, at 11 a.m.
