SPECIAL LIBRARY BOARD MEETING: Discussion on Hiring and Dolly Parton Imagination Library…

On Monday September 19, 2022 the Lawrence County Public Library Board of Directors had a Special Meeting at 5PM. The Library Board did not meet at the Regular Monthly Meeting on September 12, 2022, the meeting was cancelled and rescheduled for today by President John Osborne. Those attending were President John Osborne, Vice President Susie Chambers, Secretary Scott Osborn and Board Member Marc Lester. Others in attendance were LCPL Director Carlie Pelfrey, Caleb Farley and Deena Meade employees of the LCPLKY (Lawrence County Public Library KY) Absent was Kim Burchett, Treasurer.
Agenda
1. August 2022 Minutes – Motion by Scott Osborn 2nd by Susie Chambers. None Opposed.
2. June 2022 Financials – Discussion by Carlie Pelfrey. In June the LCPLKY Bookmobile had an operating Line of several thousand dollars that was itemized, zeroing out the account. Motion by Scott Osborn 2nd by Susie Chambers. None Opposed.
July 2022 Financials Update – Motion by Susie Chambers 2nd by John Osborne. None Opposed.
3. 2021-2022 Annual Report – Discussion by Carlie Pelfrey. The Annual Report of the LCPLKY has been approved by Kentucky Department of Library Archives (KDLA) and is listed on the library website at WWW.LCPLKY.ORG back to 2013.
4. Board Update – Discussion by Carlie Pelfrey:
- The library had a new projector installed last week. Pelfrey said the sound was amazing and Deena Meade used the projector over the weekend for a library program on “EDIBLE WEEDS” for those who forage, and they had an interesting time, she said. No cost of the new projector system has been made public at a meeting.
- Pelfrey said Deena Meade met with the Lawrence County Teen Advisory Board for the first time to discuss what the teenagers enjoy so in the future they will have events and programs for teens.
- Also Pelfrey discussed the employment situation at the library. Three people have been hired, two clerks and one program assistant. At this time, they are taking applications for a new program assistant until this Friday, September 23, 2022.
- Also Pelfrey discussed the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. (DPIL) Pelfrey said, “We have received information on Dolly several times, I have contacted many surrounding counties to see how they fund this program. Most fund it with sponsors to help like schools, libraries and the local Rotary Club,” Carlie said. “Besides the funding you have to have an administrative person to run the program and it is a lot of work, and lastly the Dolly program picks out the books — not the local library. Pelfrey said she would “continue researching the info” but there was no request for a vote on the issue.
- It was noted that all surrounding counties, including Martin and Johnson have the Imagination Library program which would cost an estimated $17,000 over a FIVE YEAR period in Lawrence County. Every month, the Imagination Library mails a free high-quality, age-appropriate book to the home address of all registered children. Ready4K sends caregivers weekly texts with fast, fun activities that boost children’s learning. Both of these programs are available FREE to families of children aged birth to five in the county.

Wow! $17,000 over a 5 year period to fund this project. Hum, I wonder where the funding could come from? Wait a minute, how about the library, they seem to have a abundance of it, or is the minimal tax rate reduction going to hurt them?
And why are you concerned about the books that the Imagination Library picks out? This leads me to believe that the board is involved in censorship of what can be read here.

Its going to be intresting to say the least. Its funny that having too much money is such a problem. Better call in the guy from down $tate.
Apparently none of you are aware that this library gives away few books EVERY week to children and adults as well as other type of educational materials….
Really can’t wait until Mark Grayson gets a new hobby…. I would like to know how many times he has actually visited the library… before and after the renovation. He’s just upset that the Library Board isn’t intimidated by him. They understand he is a man with a news blog and that is all….
