Asphalt resurfacing project underway on US 23 in Lawrence County

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (May 9, 2022) – Asphalt resurfacing project began on Monday, May 9, along US 23 in Lawrence County. This work zone is between milepoint 0.00 at the Johnson County line and milepoint 5.125 near the intersection with KY 645.

The contractor began setting construction signs on Monday, with the lane closures scheduled to be installed Wednesday, May 11. At the start of this project, the inside lanes in both directions and the median will be closed with the traffic being switched to the outside lanes.

Starting Thursday, May 12, the contractor will be milling on the two inside lanes and then finish the paving in this area,  prior to switching  traffic and closing the two outside lanes and shoulders. The lane closure will be for the entire length of the project and will also contain a reduced speed limit and double fines within the work zone.

The contractor will be working between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.  It is anticipated that the entire project will be completed by June 30, weather dependent.

Motorists should pay attention to equipment being parked in the work zone during daytime and overnight hours. There will be continuous traffic flow throughout the entirety of the project. District 12 asks drivers to use caution and obey speed limits to prevent any accidents within the work zone.
