LOUISA/LAWRENCE COUNTY TRAIL TOWN KICKS OFF 2019

The Louisa/LC Trail Town Committee will kick off 2019 with a planning meeting on THURSDAY, JANUARY 24TH AT 6 PM at the Lawrence County Senior Citizens Building on Pike Street.  The public is encouraged to attend to offer their ideas as well as hear some of the plans that are in progress.

Cathi Kise Wells, chairperson of the local Trail Town Committee explained that the “Trail Town” concept is one type of adventure tourism that Louisa and Lawrence County can capitalize on.  “Very few towns or cities can boast of having even ONE river in their downtown area but we have THREE!  Ask anyone who has studied the history of the Louisa/Fort Gay area and it all centered on those rivers.  Our very economy and heritage was based on those rivers and Trail Town is a way to highlight that history and heritage!”  Wells also commented that the City of Louisa has so much potential to become a destination venue for markets, music acts and other festival type events.

“But we aren’t just looking at the rivers as our only trails” said Wells.  “We are working with the Lawrence County Saddle Club, local mountain bike and road bike enthusiasts and hikers to develop more accessible trails throughout the county.”  We want to bring more people into our county to spend their money HERE but we also want to give our citizens something to do during their free time.

Can’t make it to the meeting, sorry. I have kayaked from the Paintsville boat ramp to the Louisa ramp. It’s a beautiful trip, but there are no easily accessible and safe areas in between. We really need some kayak ramps.
    Recommended Locations as follows:
Levisa, under bridge at RT 645
    Levisa, Chapman Park area
    Big Sandy, below locks
Big Sandy, mouth of Blaine Creek
    Blaine Creek, Blaine area
    Blaine Creek, Fallsburg area

Agree!! And the lack of adequate public access IS a focus of this committee as well as the Johnson County’s Trail Town Committee. We are also focusing on public access along the Tug Fork .
