STONE, Ky. (WYMT) – Kentucky State Police are investigating after crews found a child’s body in an early morning fire Friday.

Someone called 911 around 4 a.m. in the Stone community, reporting that there was a house fire and someone was possibly still inside.

Crews found the body of an 11-year-old girl around 5:30 a.m.

Police said the girl’s mother was also injured in the fire. She is at Pikeville Medical Center with serious burns and smoke inhalation.

Police have not released the girl’s name or a cause of the fire at this time.

The girl attended Mullins School. School staff posted on Facebook that grief counselors are available for all students on Friday and on Monday.
